multiple imagery work diary

Today I shot multiple imagery in the studio I did this in the way of photojoiner. I found this particularly difficult to do as it was hard to get the lighting correct and move the light to the right places so there was not a complete change in colour on my face. I also found it very hard to put the pictures together and for it not to look strange once I had completed it.

Above is an example of my finished photo joiner, I am not very pleased with it in general as I don't think I've took enough photographs for it to work effectively and it does not fit properly together.

I dont think I will be using this technique in my personal project.

existing advertisements

what I plan to do: today I plan to shoot existing advertisement/shop windows on a location shoot around harlow. I will focus on existing logos and shop names. I also want to experiment with capturing reflections of people in shops window displays.

what I hope to achieve: I hope to achieve photos that show the advertising side of window displays and the thought that goes into how they are put together but also how they are viewed by the public.

What I actually achieved: Overall I am disappointed with the outcome of this shoot as it was not very successful, I think this is most likely to be down to lack of thorough planning beforehand. Doing this shoot has made me realise to achieve the pictures I want I must have a proper plan before I go out to shoot if I want to be able to capture pictures I am pleased with.

Here are some examples of the pictures I got from the shoot:
I do not like this picture as I think there really isn't much too it and does not have any of the meaning behind it that I wanted to.

This is probably the best picture from my shoot although I am still not exactly pleased with it, I think it's the closet I got to what I planned. However I think that from taking this picture I would be able to develop it further thus making it more related to my chosen personal project.

What I plan to do next: firstly I am going to work on my other ideas for my personal project, but I will come back to this shoot and make my developmental ideas for example regarding my second example picture. I want to take pictures with models in front of the shop window impersonating and trying to be like the manikins as this is critical in marketing as mannequins and models are used on the tv to promote a product or clothes as you want to aspire to be like them so you will buy the clothes they are wearing or the make up they are promoting.

Blurring work diary

I did a shoot for the blurring technique in the studio today, the most difficult part of this was to ensure that the model was standing in the light as when they wasn't the photos were too dark and did not come out properly. Also due to the fact the model had to stand in the light the result was the pictures were almost too light on the models face (although this is almost unavoidable) I also found that having the shutter speed on 1 was slightly too short but could not find one in between.
Here are example of the pictures I produced from this shoot, my favourite out of the two is the second one as I alerted the saturation to make it more black and white this improved the 'orangeness' that can be seen in my first picture. I also like the reduced saturation in the second one as due to the movement it almost makes my model look ghostly.

If I incorporated this technique into my person project I think it would be quite interesting to try and do it on a location shoot as opposed to a studio shoot as I could try and produced similar pictures in my image bank- especially the ones that include transport.

Blurr technique page

Set the studio camera to a slow shutter speed- I used one second.

Have a continuous light source (model light stays on) -used red head light

Use the polystyrene boards to protect background from the light (black)

make sure the white balance matches the light source

Blur technique image bank

This image bank demonstrate the blur technique in photography, they are all similar in the way that in almost all the pictures there is one part or object that is in focus and not blurred which is the main focus and the rest is blurred. Obviously the blurred part is the part of the photograph that is moving for example the train and the bus. From looking at the pictures I have put into my image bank it is evident that when blurring it looks more appealing when there is a lot of colours in the picture. This can be seen in the comparison between the last two pictures as the grey train does not look as eye catching as the bright red bus.

I would say the first picture in this image bank is slightly weaker than the rest as there is no stationary non moving focused part to look at as it is of two dancers moving simultaneously, I personally don't think this looks as good as the others where there is a non blurred part to look at and emphasise the blurred movement.

I particularly like the composition and use of colour in the bus picture as the red of the post box and the bus brings the picture together as one. The fact that is it also taken when it's dark means that the lights on the bus look good as it's moving this is similar to the second picture in the image bank.

The overlay technique

For this technique you need two separate photographs and place them on top of each other in photoshop then you must double click on the background layer and make it into it's own layer. From here you experiment with the opacity and can rub out the bits you don't want an overlay effect of. Then flatten the image and do curve/levels to your desired effect.

Overlay work diary

Work Diary

Today I shot pictures to produce an overlay technique in photoshop which is a variation of multiple imagery. I did this on a location shoot where I had to take two separate pictures one being of a head shot and another picture of texture/pattern to overlay it. I liked doing this technique compared to other multiple imagery as it enables you to have more creative control over the outcome of the pictures as you can choose what you rub out and keep whilst just generally experimenting.
This is the first picture I took and edited. I don't think this one is too interesting. I prefer the lower picture as I experimented with the opacity more and I think the two pictures look like the go together unlike my first example. To improve on these pictures I think I could find patterns with more vibrant colours to overlay as I think it would have a more powerful effect than the particular ones I took on this shoot.

There are ways I could incorporate this technique in to my personal project, for instance if I was doing a fashion advertisement/marketing shoot i could take pictures of the clothes/person whereing the clothes and overlay it on to a interesting background to make the photos have more of a dramatic impact.

Multiple flash technique

1. For multiple technique you have to set the camera to the slowest bulb.

2. before the shoot you must take a light reading and match the apiture on the camera to the light reading outcome.

3. It is easier to have the camera set up on a tripod when doing multiple flash

4. model has to stand in light

5.after the camera is focused the model light needs to be turned off

6. you must hold the camera button down then click the trigger when you want the flash to go off (this takes the picture)

7.in between clicking the trigger you must get your model to move in order for this to work

8. take your finger off the camera button

9. TAH DAH your picture will then appear on the camera screen.

Work Diary, multiple flash

multiple flash.
I think this shoot went well and am pleased with my shots against the black background. Initially when I took my photos the background wasn't quite black enough but I was able to correct this is photoshop using the 'eye dropper' tool. From doing this technique I was able to find out that when doing multiple flash it is more effective to not use the flash to take a picture too many time- and that 2 to 3 flashes work best (as seen in my example pictures) because if too many flashes are fired the pictures become too light.

I think this example is a particular strong one and the two separate images of lydia are strong and not faded. although to improve I think if I covered the model light more when I actually took the picture then when I edited the photo her skin tone would not have turned so orange in colour.

Image bank, multiple flash!

multiple flash!

The photos in this image bank show multiple flash, each photograph shows a picture repeated but in a lot of these photos the image gets lighter when the flash is repeated. This image bank shows that multiple flash works better when against a darker background which can be clearly seen in the first photo in the image bank.

Work Diary

multiple exposure

After doing this I fully understand how to set up multiple exposure on the camera and edit the pictures on the computer after using the 'new' way, therefore I would say this has been successful. However I don't think the quality of the pictures I have taken are as good as they could be due to the fact that I only just learnt how to do multiple exposure properly. If I was to do this again I would think through what pictures to lay on top of each other instead of just practicing it. I could incorporate this technique in to my personal project but I'm too sure right now, maybe contrast a before a product has been marketed too look better and after.

Here is an example of one of the pictures I took, I think this is one of my weaker ones from my shoot because I layered it over 3 times so there is too much going on in it.

From this shoot I have learnt that multiple image photographs work better when there is a more simple (but still interesting background)
