fine art work diary

These are some of the pictures from the fine art technique shoot. I did this in the studio, I feel like this was a good decision as it meant I was able to control the lighting and get it to my desired effect, especially in my second example. I chose to put my fine art pictures in black and white as I found this is a common thing to do from my image back. I found that they did look al lot better and more effective in black and white.

fine art image bank

From this image bank it is evident that fine art pictures are commonly shown in black and white, it is also quite common for fine art pictures to be of landscapes which can also be found in my image bank, the two portraits in this fine art image bank are high definition and good quality thus contributing to the fine art effect. similarly in both of the portraits the background has been blurred out which could be due to minimum depth of field.

Slow sync image bank

A common feature is this image bank is that there is one part of the photo that is in focus and still and the rest is blurred due to the movement taking place. It seem that an effective way to show slow sync is to have moving lights within the picture as this creates a good sense of movement.

Work Diary -9

What I plan to do:
I am going to do a location shoot in Bishops Stortford interpreting the protest 'slut walk' where people campaign against women being blamed for the number of rapes that take place due to the clothes they are wearing. For this I will need my model wearing typical going out clothes i.e short skirt/dress and heels. In the actual protest the women hold up signs with slogans like 'sluts say yes' and 'my clothes are not my consent' etc. I will have to replicate a sign like this for my shoot.

What I hope to achieve:
I will have to make sure the sign is clearly visible to convey the message I want. I want my pictures to be able to show the message I want therefore the sign will need to be a main focal point.

What I actually achieved:

These are two of the edited pictures I produced in this shoot, I am pleased with these as I feel I have achieved what I set out to do.  I had to go over the writing in photoshop on a separate layer then turn the opacity down to make the writing more visible. The only thing I would want to improve in these pictures is the fact that the background is quite dark but I could not find a way to overcome this.

What I plan to do next:
I am pleased with this shoot so I think I should leave this idea where it is and move on to something new to ensure I get a range of different topics within my personal project. Next I will review my original ideas and choose one to work on and produce some different photos.

work diary- 8

what I plan to do-
Today I plan to focus my shoot around 'mental illness' for this I'm using Leah dot Wilsh as my model on a location shoot. for this shoot it is essential I have a tripod or my photo will be unachievable.
this painting has inspired my shoot
What I hope to achieve: I want my picture to convey mental illness/the idea of having a split personality. I am going to take one in focus picture centred then lower the shutter speed and get moving pictures around the centre one to create the 'ghostly effect'. On photoshop I will then layer the individual pictures on top of each other and use the eraser to rub out the main picture to reveal the blurred pictures.

What I actually achieved:
Overall I am pleased with the outcome of this shoot and the final image that I produced as it's what I wanted. I think I could have took a bit more time and care rubbing out around the moving pictures as I think it would look better if it wasn't lighter around them (as you can see to the left). I could have also took the placing to the blurred pictures into more consideration as the left ones blend in to each other.

What I plan to next:
I think I will redo this shoot making the changes to make it look better and perhaps do it some different locations too.

Inspiration for change in direction of personal project

Work Record > shoot 7

what I plan to do:
I Plan to do a studio shoot today using Lydia as my model to show the issues surrounding body image in teenage girls and the strive for 'perfection'. I will need dim dark lighting in the studio.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope that my pictures are slightly shocking to gain the audiences attention and I want to show a good use of lighting to highlight certain areas on my pictures.

What I actually achieved?

What I plan to do next:
Im going to leave this topic for now and move on to another one, I think I might try and portray the issue of mental illness using the multiple flash technique as I need to incorporate some techniques in to my project and I think this one would work well with my theme.

Work Record- shoot 6

What I plan to do:

I want to do a location shoot in Stortford then come back in to college to edit my photos, I need to make sure my model is also okay and available to do this.
I want to recreate this photo and use it for inspiration in my shoot.
I'm then going to go on to edit the photos and show underage/binge drinking in a negative light then put a spin on it and advertise underage people drinking in a controversial positive light. For this I will have my model dress up in school uniform.

What I hope to achieve:
^^^^^^^^^^

What I actually achieved?
my idea changed when I got down to the shoot as I could not get a school uniform, instead I decided to focus my shoot around smoking and tried to show it in a negative and positive light.
here are some of the pictures that I took:

What I plan to do next?
I am going to take a slight different direction than my original topic of marketing and focus on 'issues' for example mental, physical, smoking, alcohol etc. I think refining my original project proposal will enable be to produce better pictures as I've been finding it difficult having such a broad spectrum of things to choose from.

PLAN.......................

I plan to develop my project by shooting controversial advertisements for example trying to promote the use of drugs and excessive amounts of alcohol. I want to do this on a location shoot and make it look realistically like teenage drinking.

also want to do a video/animation- for this I was thinking of recreating the cadburys 'eyebrow' advert.

best photos so far and evaluation.

I think that to improve on these photos, I should try and show my personal project more clearly in my photos as it’s not always obvious. I also need to plan my shoots in depth before the lesson as a lot of them are spur of the moment ideas so if I planned them I am more likely to get better quality pictures that I am happy with. I think I get better pictures on location shoots which I have organized beforehand for example when I went to the cricket shed.

Work Record shoot 5

Planning-
I plan to do a studio shoot today therefore I need to book the studio. I then need to set up the studio and make sure my model is available to use- (lydia). I will not need any props for this shoot so it's fine.

What I hope to achieve:
I hope to put a spin on to my makeup advertisement pictures I did last lesson but capture contrasting versions where the makeup is not 'flawless' and not the type of picture you would expect to see advertising makeup.  I will then add the typical text seen on adverts to make the contrast.

What I actually achieved:

These are the photos I achieved from this shoot, it did not go completely how I hoped. I think I could have emphasised the point that the photos are meant to be the opposite to the typical photos you would see on advertisements. I do like the lettering I used on the second example of my work as I think it is the correct type of text and layout for a makeup advertisement.

What I plan to do next:
I feel like I have taken this idea as far as it will go so I will go back to my mindmap and work on a completely different idea I have and work to develop this.

slow sync- technique page

Slow sync is when the camera has a longer shutter speed as well as firing the flash.
I did this in the studio so you have to do it against a black ground.
Use the red head as the constant light  but have polystyrene boards blocking any light falling on the background.
exposure reading for that light, then add in the flash for that apiture and use rear curtain sync so the flash goes off at the end.

work diary- slow sync

Today I shot slow sync in the studio, slow sync enabled me to capture movement slightly cleared than if I was just doing blurring. To achieve this I had to reduce the shutter speed and set up for the flash to be fired when the picture was about to be taken. The most difficult thing about this shoot was ensuring that the light did not hit the black background and make sure the model is standing in the light (redhead) I think this technique could fit in to my personal project if I was to take some action shoots like bmx riding/skateboarding to promote an energy drink as the technique would suit the picture.

Here are two examples of the shots I achieved from the shoot, I think they show the technique of slow sync rather well as it is evident that they are similar to blurr but slightly more sharper which is primarily the point the of the technique. I think the second photo is the stronger one out of the two as the movement is blurred next to a clear sharper picture of the model.

work record shoot-

What I plan to do-
I need to make sure my model is available and willing to take part in my shoot. I will be getting the train to my location shoot in Elsenham. I also need to remember to purchase my props for the shoot so before I get the train today I will go to Tesco and buy some fairy liquid lashing up liquid and some cereal.

What I hope to achieve-
I want my pictures to challenge the perception of Marketing. I will do this by putting my products which I am trying to advertise in an environment that they would not usually be in. My shoot is in an abandoned cricket shed (which has a kitchen) it is extremely run down and dirty so it would be unusual for the products I am trying to market to be advertised there.

What I actually achieved-

these are the pictures I took from this shoot, I think I set out what I wanted to achieve as a clear contrast can be seen.

What I plan to do next-
I still like this idea and will try and develop it with different products.

photojoiner technique page

1. choose a subject for your photos. photograph it in section (easier to work your way from left to right in rows)
2. upload pictures to photoshop. work out how many a long you have for an a4 document.
3.change the size of your pictures accordingly
4.arrange your pictures overlapping and experimenting with layers to form your picture.

sequencing technique

for sequencing take some continuous photographs of a movement/action then make the pictures the same size on photoshop. put the pictures onto a new document with a transparent background. put the pictures together an equal amount apart (do this by making the zoom 100% and using the squares for measurement)
FINISHED PRINT DONE.

work record- personal shoot 2

what I plan to do:
When I go on holiday I plan to take touristy pictures which would be used to advertise the north of africa. I want to take a range of pictures including animals and landscapes.

what I hope to achieve:
I hope to get some pictures which would appeal to tourist and make them want to holiday in the place I took the pictures.

What I did achieve:
I like this picture as I think it shows the holiday resort I went to in a positive way and makes it look like an appealing place to visit on holiday.

This is a picture I took on a trip to an animal reserve in africa I think this would make people want to also go there and advertises it well as the way I have taken it makes it seem like the animals are in good conditions and they look content.

what I plan to do next:
I plan to take the pictures I took at the animal reserve and turn them into a campaign to show how animals are mistreated in these reserve (however not the case in the one I went to)

Here is an example of my development of my idea:

I chose to do these pictures in the style of barbara kruger

work record

What I plan to do:
I plan to do a studio shoot and take headshot beauty shots which would be used for makeup campaigns/advertising. I then want to apply makeup on photoshop. To plan for this shoot I need to book the studio and set it up using the ring flash.

What I hope to achieve:
I want my photoshop editing to make the models 'makeup' look flawless but not too plastic looking. I also want to make sure I am using ring flash properly as last time I used it I kept getting the corners of the light in my shot which I then had to crop out.

What I actually achieved:
This is my favourite picture from the shoot as the makeup stands out but it's still subtle enough for it not to be obvious that it's edited on afterwards. I also like the composition of this photo as I have included breathing space, as if it was an advert there would need to be space to add pictures/text. In this photo I also had my model right against the background so it makes a strong effective shadow all the way around her.

I think this is one of my weaker photos as the makeup looks too drawn on, and the model positioning looks unnatural and posed. this is not what I would expect on a professional advert.

What I plan to do next:
I plan to carry on developing this and add text and pictures of makeup to make them seem more like adverts.

Personal image bank 4

controversial ads

The pictures in this image bank are all controversial or banned advertisement campaigns. I think this marketing strategy is most effective as if the adverts/photographs produced shock people they are more likely to be remembered. Although with this method it is important that you do not over step the mark and in turn tarnish the companies reputation. I don't think any of the adverts in this image bank over step the line really.  Half the pictures in this photo incorporate text to add a shock factor to the advert this seems to be an effective way to make these adverts memorable.

The second picture in the image bank uses a sexual innuendo through the picture and the text. It seems strange that they would use this as a way to sell a sandwich but it makes the advertisement memorable through the inappropriateness. I think it's also important that if you use text on a photo then it must be just as important as the actual picture and this advert does this effectively.

The third picture in this image bank is for an anti animal abuse campaign. Cleverly they have done a mock up of a perfume add but used the dog in place where the perfume would be. I think this is particularly good as it doesn't look so obvious that the dog has been photoshopped to replace the perfume bottle. The composition of this photo also works well.
